The North Ireland folks, are different - they've got a good sense of Humor - just like their neighbors down South, as well as having a small Community base, everyone knows someone else who knows someone who knows you or your relations. They're also generally more hardnosed hardworking Country-side folks to those elsewhere within the UK, so don't try to take them for a ride and swindle them out of money, they'll see you coming a mile off, and send you on your way - generally in a good mannered way...

As for the Countryside, it's great, throw in the throwbacks from the divisions of past, and you have a sense of historical identification from one place to another. The red-white-and blue kerb stones, the banting hanging between street lighting, the paintings on building walls, each has a story to tell.

And as to the Marching season, this perhaps, if they could stop bickering between each other, is one of the most attractive pageantry that NI can offer to Tourists in future, whilst at the same time showing off the skills of the drummers, and other musicians alike - for certainly they are really skillful - and indeed it could end up being a scouting ground for such Talent acquisition.

Interesting comment. I have mixed thoughts. The music and pageantry can be great. But there is also that bowler-hatted darkness that hangs around. I'm not from Northern Ireland, I grew up in Glasgow. But perhaps not so different.

One big memory I have is of going to Toronto in July when I was about 20 and thinking I was in the New World. Shiny buildings, big cars, happy people. And then we got stuck in a traffic jam - road closed ahead for a parade. That's nice, I thought, and then I saw it was an Orange parade. And it seemed just as ugly as what I thought I'd left behind.

I've met many great people from Northern Ireland. One thing I think we share is the head scratching towards the scenes in the videos below.

We still have much to learn from the Dutch when it comes to Orange parades. If only it was like that in Northern Ireland and Scotland.
